A Chinese tourist has been detained in Kashmir after travelling through Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir without the required permissions, triggering security alerts.
Officials said 29-year-old Hu Congtai arrived in India on a tourist visa that allowed visits only to select Buddhist sites but flew to Leh instead, skipped mandatory foreigner registration, toured Zanskar, and later travelled to Srinagar.
Security agencies intercepted unusual online chatter, and a check of his phone revealed searches related to CRPF deployment and Article 370.
He had also acquired an Indian SIM card and stayed in an unregistered guesthouse while visiting several sensitive locations in the Valley.
Hu, a Boston University physics graduate who has travelled widely, is being questioned for visa violations and may be deported.
