Kashmir has never suffered from a shortage of stories. It has only suffered from a shortage of spaces where those stories can be told.
Beyond the headlines that dominate the news cycle lies another Kashmir, one painted through poetry, captured through photography, narrated through short films, preserved in personal essays and reflected in the everyday experiences of ordinary people. It is a Kashmir of artists, writers, photographers, filmmakers, sketch artists, storytellers and young creators whose work often remains confined to notebooks, mobile phones, hard drives or social media timelines, never reaching the wider audience it deserves.
Every creative work is a document of its time. A photograph can preserve history in a single frame. A poem can express emotions that news reports cannot. A personal essay can reveal the pulse of a society more honestly than statistics. A short video can capture traditions, dialects and memories before they disappear. Creativity is not merely an act of expression; it is a way of preserving identity.
In a region as culturally rich and diverse as Kashmir, nurturing creative expression is as important as reporting current affairs. Journalism informs society, but creativity gives it a soul. The two are not competitors, they are companions in documenting the life of a people.
Recognising this, Jhelum Journal is opening its pages and digital platforms to the creative voices of the Valley. Through a dedicated Creative Corner, we hope to provide a platform where emerging and established creators alike can share their work with a wider audience.
Whether it is a thought-provoking article, an original poem, a compelling photograph, a picture essay, a documentary short, a travelogue, a sketch, a piece of visual art, a human-interest story or a video that captures the essence of Kashmir, every meaningful submission has the potential to inspire, educate and connect communities.
The purpose is simple: to create a space where creativity is recognised on merit, where untold stories find an audience, and where talented individuals receive the visibility they deserve. Every contribution enriches the collective narrative of Kashmir and strengthens the region’s cultural archive for future generations.
