Srinagar Dec 19 : In a disturbing incident highlighting serious gaps in healthcare infrastructure, attendants were seen pushing a patient on a trolley for nearly one kilometre after a CT scan was reportedly unavailable at Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara. The incident, which unfolded in full public view, has sparked widespread outrage on social media.

According to bystanders, the patient was shifted under extremely distressing conditions, with vehicles and pedestrians moving alongside, making the scene painful to witness. Several onlookers recorded the incident on their mobile phones, and the video soon went viral on social media platforms, drawing sharp criticism over the preparedness and facilities at the medical college.

The video, captured by pedestrians, triggered a storm of reactions online, with users questioning how a government medical college could function without a functional CT scan facility. Many termed the incident as a grim reflection of the healthcare system’s failure, especially in catering to patients from rural areas.

However, despite the growing public outcry, no official statement has been issued by the authorities at GMC Handwara so far.

Meanwhile, the FAIMA Doctors Association has strongly urged the government to take immediate action. Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, National Executive Member of the FAIMA Doctors Association, appealed to the Hon’ble Chief Minister and the Health Minister to intervene urgently over the repeated breakdown of the CT scan facility at GMC Handwara.

Expressing serious concern, Dr Khan stated that it is alarming that even in 2025, a Government Medical College continues to operate without a reliable CT scan facility. He emphasized that healthcare should not translate into helplessness for patients, particularly those belonging to rural and economically weaker sections.

Dr Khan urged the authorities to ensure uninterrupted CT scan services at GMC Handwara, warning that repeated failures force patients to suffer unnecessarily or seek costly diagnostic services outside the district.

The incident has once again brought the spotlight on healthcare infrastructure in north Kashmir, with growing demands for accountability and immediate corrective measures.
