Jammu, June 6: In a significant disciplinary action, four police personnel, including a Station House Officer (SHO), have been suspended over allegations of attempting to facilitate a compromise in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, official sources said.
According to sources, the action was initiated after serious allegations surfaced that the officials sought to influence the course of the investigation by encouraging or facilitating an out-of-court settlement between the parties involved. Such compromises are strictly prohibited under the provisions of the POCSO Act, which is designed to ensure stringent legal protection for children and mandates that offences be investigated and prosecuted through the judicial process.
The suspended officials include the concerned SHO and three other policemen posted at the same police unit. Senior police authorities have also ordered a departmental inquiry to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt at compromise and to determine whether any violations of law, procedure, or professional conduct occurred.
Police officials emphasized that offences involving children are treated with utmost seriousness and reiterated the department’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims. They stated that there would be zero tolerance for any misconduct, negligence, or abuse of authority by police personnel, particularly in cases involving vulnerable sections of society.
The incident has drawn considerable attention due to the sensitive nature of POCSO cases, where transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to legal procedures are essential. Legal experts note that the POCSO Act does not permit negotiated settlements, and any attempt to influence investigations or bypass due process can attract serious consequences.
Authorities said the departmental probe is underway, and further action may be taken depending on the findings of the inquiry. The police department has assured that the investigation into the original POCSO case will continue in accordance with the law and that any officer found responsible for misconduct will face strict disciplinary measures.
