Srinagar, May 22: A major tragedy was averted in Srinagar on Thursday after a woman was rescued by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) while allegedly attempting to jump into the River Jhelum.
According to officials, the incident took place in the Srinagar city area during the morning hours, creating panic among people present nearby. Eyewitnesses said the woman was seen moving towards the river in a distressed condition before attempting to take the extreme step.
However, alert SDRF personnel deployed near the river reacted swiftly and immediately launched a rescue operation. The team managed to pull the woman out of the water safely within minutes, preventing loss of life.
After the successful rescue, the woman was shifted to a nearby hospital for medical examination and treatment. Officials said her condition is stable and she is under observation.
Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the woman, while police have started an investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident. Initial reports suggest that personal stress may have been a possible reason behind the attempt, though officials have not confirmed anything yet.
The incident once again highlights growing concerns over repeated suicide attempts and distress-related cases reported from various bridges and riverbanks across Srinagar. Locals have urged authorities to strengthen safety arrangements, including installation of protective fencing and increased surveillance around vulnerable spots along the River Jhelum.
In recent years, SDRF teams in Srinagar have played a crucial role in saving several lives through timely rescue operations in and around the river. Citizens have appreciated the quick response and professionalism shown by the rescue personnel during Thursday’s operation.
Police officials have appealed to the public to immediately inform emergency services if they notice anyone in distress near water bodies or public places to help prevent such incidents in time.
