Srinagar: The budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is likely to be held in two phases in 2026, with one part scheduled before the holy month of Ramadhan and the second after Eid-ul-Fitr, official sources said.According to sources, the NC-led government is considering convening the session in two parts. If the plan materialises, the first phase of the session will be held before the commencement of Ramadhan.
With the onset of the holy month, the Assembly will go into a month-long recess, resuming its proceedings after Eid-ul-Fitr.Sources privy to the development said the government is seriously considering recommending the convening of the Assembly from the first week of February 2026. As per the proposal under discussion, the Assembly may adjourn for a month-long recess around February 18 or 19, before resuming after Eid.The final decision on the matter is expected to be taken in the next cabinet meeting, likely to be held after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah returns from abroad. During the meeting, the cabinet is expected to recommend to the Lieutenant Governor the convening of the Assembly for the budget session.
Meanwhile, preparations for the 2026–27 budget are already underway. The Finance Department had initiated the process in October 2025 by seeking budget estimates from departments for the next financial year, along with revised estimates for the current fiscal year.
Budget discussions with all departments have also been completed.Notably, the budget for 2025–26 was presented by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on March 7, 2025.
