National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Monday strongly denounced the stone-pelting incident in Kishtwar that allegedly targeted a mosque and a madrassa, calling upon the Centre to direct states to ensure the safety of religious institutions.
Terming the act unacceptable, Abdullah said that disruptive forces exist but stressed that India’s secular Constitution guarantees freedom for all faiths to run their religious establishments. He maintained that it is the responsibility of the central government to ensure states take firm steps to prevent such incidents.
Commenting on regional diplomacy, Abdullah expressed optimism about future India–Bangladesh ties, particularly in the wake of the forthcoming elections in the neighbouring country.
He said New Delhi and the incoming government in Bangladesh should work together to explore fresh opportunities for cooperation.On the situation in Kashmir, the veteran leader voiced hope that the New Year would usher in peace, ease the hardships of people, and lead to a revival of tourism across the region.
