Jammu, Dec 24 : The Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Jammu, has issued a public notice directing owners of motor vehicles bearing registration numbers of other States or Union Territories, but owned by residents of the Jammu Division, to obtain re-registration within a stipulated time frame.According to the notice it has been observed that a large number of commercial and non-commercial vehicles registered outside Jammu and Kashmir are being continuously kept and plied within the Jammu Division beyond the permissible period, without obtaining a new registration mark as mandated under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.The RTO stated that vehicles kept in another State or Union Territory for more than 12 months must be re-registered with the local registering authority.
Non-compliance, the notice said, hampers effective regulation, vehicle traceability and enforcement, besides posing risks to public safety, law and order, and internal security.
All such vehicle owners have been asked to apply for assignment of a new registration number within 15 days from the date of issuance of the notice. The RTO warned that after the expiry of this period, any vehicle found violating the provisions will be liable for seizure, detention, imposition of penalties and other legal action under the Motor Vehicles Act and relevant rules, without any further notice.
The notice has been issued in the interest of public safety, internal security and effective enforcement of motor vehicle laws across the Jammu Division.
