Srinagar Dec 19:Iltija Mufti has written to the Station House Officer of Kothibagh Police Station seeking the registration of an FIR against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over an incident in which he was seen removing the naqab of a young Muslim doctor during a public function.
She said the episode caused deep distress among Muslims, particularly women, and amounted to an assault on dignity, autonomy and personal identity. In her letter, Mufti said the act took place in full public view and was accompanied by visible amusement from those present, including Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister.
She stated that the incident has shaken the confidence of Muslim women across the country and described it as a serious violation of personal rights at a time when the community is already facing social and political marginalisation.
Mufti said that following the incident, disturbing videos have surfaced from different parts of the country showing miscreants forcibly pulling off the hijabs of Muslim women, suggesting that such behaviour is being normalised.
She alleged that the lack of strong condemnation and accountability has emboldened anti-social elements.Expressing concern as a young Muslim woman, Mufti said no deterrent action has been taken so far and urged the police to ensure equal application of the law.
She stressed that political position cannot provide immunity from legal scrutiny.Calling for immediate action, Mufti urged the SHO to register an FIR against the Bihar Chief Minister to safeguard the dignity of women and uphold their right to dress according to their choice without fear.
