Raipur, Dec 01 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid out a renewed vision for India’s policing system, unveiling a detailed ‘Roadmap for Policing towards Vision 2047’ during the 60th All India Conference of Directors General and Inspectors General of Police.
The Prime Minister urged top police leaders to adopt a more modern, humane and responsive approach to meet the expectations of a rapidly progressing nation.
As per news agency Kashmir News Corner , The three-day conference, themed “Viksit Bharat, Security Dimensions,” brought together the country’s top security brass, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, NSA Ajit Doval, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, DGPs and IGPs of all States and UTs, as well as heads of CAPFs and Central Police Organisations. Over 700 officers also participated virtually.
Modi emphasised that improving the public’s trust especially among the youth must be central to India’s policing reforms. He stressed that professionalism, empathy and swift responsiveness are essential for policing in a nation aspiring to become a developed India.
During the address, the Prime Minister underlined the importance of strengthening policing in urban centres, enhancing the role of tourist police and expanding awareness about the newly enacted criminal laws Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam and Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita which replace the age-old IPC, Evidence Act and CrPC.
He also issued directives on bolstering coastal and internal security, promoting the use of emerging technologies, ensuring awareness of judicial reforms, and intensifying the fight against drug abuse. Modi reiterated the need for continuous monitoring of banned outfits and focused development of regions recently cleared of Left Wing Extremism.
Highlighting nationwide efforts to eradicate LWE by March next year, the PM noted that several top extremist leaders have recently been neutralised or have surrendered, demonstrating the effectiveness of ongoing security operations.
The conference also discussed long-term policing strategies, evolving counter-terror and counter-radicalisation tactics, the use of advanced technology to enhance women’s safety, and mechanisms to bring back Indian fugitives from abroad. Strengthening forensic science capabilities for stronger investigations and prosecutions was another major discussion point.
Modi urged States and UTs to adopt innovative approaches for securing uninhabited islands, optimise the use of NATGRID-linked databases and integrate them with artificial intelligence to produce actionable intelligence. He further encouraged universities to conduct case studies on forensic usage in policing to strengthen justice delivery.
He called for enhanced preparedness for natural disasters such as cyclones and floods emphasising coordinated planning and round-the-clock response. Referring to Cyclone Ditwah, the PM said a unified and proactive strategy is crucial to minimise impact.
The conference concluded with the Prime Minister decorating Intelligence Bureau officers with the President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service. For the first time, awards were also presented to the three best-performing cities in urban policing, recognising innovation and excellence in policing practices. (KNC)
